The inhumane conditions of Bradley Manning's detention
MV>>> Or maybe the US people were not ready for a black president after
RC>> Obama's mother was white, or did you forget that?
MvdV> I didn't, I always wondered why someone who is half white is
MvdV> labelled black. It is however not my perception that counts. It is
MvdV> the perception of the US people that counts in this regard, and
MvdV> THEY cal him black.
Back when people in this country paid attention to such things, one black
five generations back in an otherwise white family tree was enough to get one
'colored' (calling them 'black' is a fairly recent change). I suppose there
are those who
still make such distinctions; that sort of thing used to be a matter of law (in
most if not
all southern states) but isn't any longer.
RC>> His race has nothing to do with his shortcomings.
MvdV> It may have something to do with his _perceived_ shortcomings
MvdV> though. You guys are still suffering from the traumas of the era of
Shortcomings, period. Not perceived shortcomings. The man is a socialist if
not an outright communist. There are a LOT of people in this country that use
that history of slavery as a crutch; the last people born into slavery died out
least half a century ago. FWIW, the last Civil War widow finally died a bit
ten years ago (she'd been a sweet young 19 year old when she married a seventy-
seomething Civil War veteran back around 1910.
